Fodil Fadli, Architect., PhD., Associate Professor
Dr. Fodil Fadli is an architect-designer, academic-educator and researcher-innovator. He is currently working as an associate professor of architecture and urban design at Qatar University Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP-QU). He obtained a PhD with expertise in Sustainable Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Huddersfield (UK). Fodil worked in industry and academia in the UK, Europe and the MENA region as well as having been a sustainability consultant/associate with international / US-based firms.
His teaching and research interests span sustainable architecture, sustainability assessment and modelling, building performance evaluation, Internet of things and people/smart buildings, building information modelling (BIM), architectural topology optimization, traditional architecture, Islamic architecture and design, digitizing heritage, health and wellbeing through design, AI applications in arts, design and architecture, digital art and design, interior design and healing spaces, and design in dynamic environments.
As a former Department Chair of Architecture and Urban Planning at Qatar University (Apr 2016- May 2021), he has managed to restructure and regenerate the whole department, and successfully lead the B.Arch. program to secure its first NAAB International Certification [NAAB ICert] designation (2018). He was also the Architecture and Urban Planning Department Graduate Programs Coordinator [2015-2016].
He has expanded the R&DI portfolio and capacities by encouraging and supporting trans-disciplinary cross-boundaries research. Moreover, he has published 100+ scientific articles, conference and journal papers and is the recipient of several R&DI grants, attracting (as LPI / PI) more than US$ 3.5 Million in the last few years. His research and innovation adopts cross-boundaries trans-disciplinary scholarly activities bridging arts and humanities with social sciences, and linking health and well-being to design through the implementation of digital technologies. As an expert in the field, he is regularly invited internationally, regionally and locally to speak about his academic research and connections to praxis. He also acts as an external reviewer for educational, research and funding institutions worldwide. He sits on several international committees, acts as a NAAB reviewer and provides expert-reviews and assessment for architecture and design schools, universities, international founding bodies, conferences, advisory boards and journals.
Fodil’s moto in academia, practice and in life in general, is inspired from Jerry Dunn’s famous quote: “Don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limits”
