I am delighted and proud that our demo paper, “Qayyem: A Real-time Platform for Scoring Proficiency of Arabic Essays,” has been accepted at ACL 2026 (the world’s top conference in the field of Natural Language Processing).
This acceptance, however, holds special significance.
⭐ “Qayyem” is the product of continuous research over the past 3 years to fill a scientific and technological gap (perhaps small, but a significant one) that Western scientists have addressed for over 60 years: the automated evaluation of the quality of articles written in Arabic. This helps students improve their Arabic writing skills.
⭐ “Qayyem” is an example of transforming academic research into a practical application (which will benefit a segment of users, God willing). This is neither common nor easy, as it requires practical considerations and implementation steps that are not usually addressed in academic research.
⭐”Qayyim” is a platform that helps secondary school teachers (and similar institutions) automatically correct student essays written in Arabic based on several writing characteristics, such as style and development of ideas.
⭐”Qayyim” was developed in Qatar by a team from Qatar University, with Hoor Elbahanasawi playing a key role, assisted by Marwan Sayed, Sohaila Eltanbouly, and Fatima Zahra Brahamia.
⭐”Qayyim” compiles all the team’s contributions over the past three years, all of which have been presented at prestigious conferences such as SIGIR 2025, ACL 2025, and EACL 2026.
⭐”Qayyim” is currently being piloted at Qatar University, and arrangements are being made to pilot it in some schools under the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar.
Many thanks to the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council (QRDI) for funding this project, and to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar for providing our team with the opportunity to collect training data and test our models and platform.
