I gave a research lecture this Thursday at Qatar University titled “Beyond the “Red Pen”: Automated Correction of Arabic Articles for the Next Generation“, that presented my research team’s work on “Automated Correction of Student Essays Written in Arabic,” focusing on innovative technical aspects, practical applications, and potential societal impact.
I introduced our new Arabic essay dataset, “LAILA,” which comprises approximately 8,000 student essays from 24 Qatari secondary schools. This is the largest database available in this field, categorized across seven writing attributes. Next, I will present our innovative essay correction framework, “TRATES,” which achieves outstanding performance in both Arabic and English. Following this, I will showcase our online correction platform, “Qayem,” which can assist teachers in assessing students’ Arabic writing proficiency. Finally, I will discuss open research questions in this area in light of our future directions.
