الحمد لله الذي بنعمته تتم الصالحات
There is no bigger pleasure in academia than graduating a new PhD student!
I’m very pleased and very proud that my PhD student Fatima Haouari has successfully passed her dissertation defense distinctly yesterday *without modifications* — congratulations Dr. Fatima! 👏👏👏
Fatima has not just produced a nice dissertation!
In a 5-year journey, she has achieved impressive research record with publications at SIGIR, ECIR, IP&M, SNAM, and CLEF. But more importantly, she has defined a new research problem, constructed new Arabic datasets, and proposed benchmarking models to pave the way for future researchers to work on.
In parallel, she has received (with her group mates) the Best Paper Award at WANLP 2022, served the community as a PC member at prestigious conferences (e.g., SIGIR, ECIR, CIKM), and co-organized CheckThat! Lab at CLEF 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024. She also received the Outstanding Reviewer Award at ECIR 2024. Furthermore, Fatima has led the top 500 distinguished female graduates of QU this year!
With that, I’m confident she can now serve the research community as a solid independent researcher!
Thanks to the examination committee, Prof. Eric Atwell (University of Leeds), Prof. Cagatay Catal (QU), Prof. Rehab Duwairi (QU), and Prof. Tamer Khattab (QU) for their support and valuable feedback.
Thanks to Qatar National Research Fund for supporting Fatima’s PhD with GSRA grant.
