I don’t think there is a more pleasant moment in the academic life of a professor than the graduation of his *first* PhD student 🙂
Congratulations to Dr. Maram Hasanain for passing her PhD defense today (without modifications!) for the dissertation titled “Towards Effective Arabic Information Retrieval on the Web and Social Media” !!!
Maram has contributed heavily to the under-represented area of “Arabic IR”, paving the way for more future work in this area, and more specifically on the Web Search and Misinformation Detection tasks, God Willing.
She has not only produced a nice piece of research, but also published during her PhD in several reputable IR (and AI) venues: SIGIR, CIKM, WSDM, ECIR, IRJ, JASIST, IJCAI, CLEF, and TREC. Very proud of her as she is indeed already an independent researcher!
Thanks to the committee, Prof. Iadh Ounis, Prof. Abdelaziz Bouras, Dr. Abdelkarim Erradi, and Prof. Usama Ebead, for their insightful feedback.
