About the Workshop

Following the success and overwhelming response to our 1st Intensive Bioinformatics Summer Workshop in 2024, we are excited to announce the 2nd edition focusing on microbiome and metagenome analysis. This intensive training program aims to promote bioinformatics awareness and literacy among Qatar University students. We really hope the supervisors/faculties can encourage their students to participate in this event.

Workshop Details

Dates: June 15-26, 2025 (excluding weekends: June 20-21)
Venue: Qatar University
Theme: Microbiome and Metagenome Analysis
Fee: QAR 50 per student

Prerequisites

Participants must have completed ONE of the following:

  • Introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC)
  • CMPS 101: Introduction to Computing (Fall 2024 onwards only)
  • BIOM 685

Note:
Students who do not fulfill the above criteria must attend the one-day workshop for “
Introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC)“. Please see the available dates here. There are two available workshop prior; first on April 19th and the second is on June 7th.

We will cross-check with our database using the given email address. If students do not fulfill the pre-requisite after June 7th, their names will be removed from the registration list.

Students who have attended last year are welcomed/encouraged to attend the same course this year to refresh their skills.

Eligibility

This workshop is only open to currently active undergraduate and master students from Qatar University. Undergraduate students are highly encouraged to participate in this intensive workshop. We really hope the supervisors/faculties can encourage their students to participate in this event.

Unfortunately, due to resource constraint, we will not be able to include staff, research assistants, PhD students, Post-Docs and others.

Workshop Objectives

  • Understand fundamental concepts of microbiome science and metagenomics
  • Develop practical skills in processing and analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
  • Learn standard bioinformatics workflows for microbiome and metagenome analysis
  • Master visualization techniques for microbial community data
  • Apply statistical methods for interpreting microbiome datasets
  • Gain hands-on experience with relevant bioinformatics tools and software
  • Develop the ability to independently design and execute microbiome research projects

What You’ll Learn

Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in:

  • Designing a microbiome/metagenome
  • Quality control and preprocessing of metagenomic sequences
  • Taxonomic classification and community profiling
  • Functional annotation and pathway analysis
  • Microbial diversity analysis and visualization
  • Comparative metagenomics approaches
  • Integration of multi-omics data in microbiome research

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for undergraduate and master students at Qatar University with interest in:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Microbiology
  • Genomics
  • Computational biology
  • Environmental science
  • Health sciences

What’s New This Year

  • Assessment Option: Opportunity to sit for an examination and earn a Certificate of Achievement (in addition to the Certificate of Attendance like last year)
