Dr. Hashem is a qualified and trained academic in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing, and currently works as a faculty member at the Applied Geography and GIS Program, College of Arts & Sciences, Qatar University. He obtained his PhD in 2002 from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, King’s College London (University of London) where his thesis title was “the Applications of High Resolution Remote Sensing and GIS To Parameterize Spatially Distributed Soil-Erosion Models”. Before that, Dr Hashem obtained his M.Sc. degree in 1997 in in Geographic and Geodetic Information Systems from the Department of Geomatics, UCL (University of London), and was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering in 1990 from the University of Aleppo, Syria.
Dr Hashem has a diverse academic experience which spans over more than 20 years where he worked as a faculty member at Qatar University, University of Bahrain, Edinburgh University (UK) and University of Aleppo (Syria). Dr Hashem’s research interests are in the natural and built environments, with specific applications in urban growth modeling and coastal environments. His recent work investigates land use and land cover changes and their implications on the social and economic development in Qatar and the Gulf region.
