Basyouni Hamada (Ph.D.)

Professor of Communication and Public Opinion

Dr. Basyouni Hamada is Professor of Communication and Public Opinion in the Department of Mass Communication, College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University.  He is the author of more than 60 journal articles, book chapters, authored and edited books in addition to more than 100 refereed international conference presentations.  His articles appeared in highly regarded refereed journals such as Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Studies, Journal of International Communication, Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice, Javnost-The Public, Global Media and Communication, Journal of Arab and Muslim Communication Research, and Global Media Journal. Dr. Hamada’s research and teaching encompass a wide array of subjects including  global communication, political communication & public opinion,  journalism culture & ethics, Arab media systems,  communication research methods, journalism and corruption, digital communication and society, press freedom, and de- westernizing journalism studies and profession from the Islamic perspective. 

Dr. Hamada has served as, Editor, Associate Editor and Reviewer for several refereed international journals, organized, chaired and co-chaired several conferences. He has presented many keynote addresses, established and reviewed a number of mass communication and journalism programs, and supervised co-supervised and examined 35 Master and PhD theses. He was a member of the highest committee of the academic promotion at Qatar University. He also served as Dean and Deputy Dean for a number of Colleges of Mass Communication.

His teaching experience extends for about 35 years in which he taught at Cairo University, American University in Cairo, International Islamic University Malaysia, United Arab Emirates University and Northwestern University in Doha. His dedication to academia is further evident in his active roles within various academic associations, including being an elected member of the International Council of IAMCR for 8 years, as well as memberships in AEJMC, WAAPOR, National Communication Association USA, International Communication Association, and several other scholarly organizations.  In 2006, Dr. Hamada was chosen by the World Bank, UNESCO, and FAO to serve on the Steering Committee of the “First World Congress on Communication for Development.” Additionally, he served as a member of a UNESCO panel during the preparatory phase of the “World Summit on Information Society” (WSIS) held in 2002. Dr. Hamada’s contribution was recognized in 2010 when he received the Cairo University Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Research. He also held the position of Book Reviews Editor for ‘Digital Journalism’.

In 1983,  Hamada earned his B.A in Mass Communication from Cairo University, Egypt, with grade of “excellent with honors”; in 1987, he obtained his M.A from the same university on “Agenda –Setting Function of Mass Media, with grade of “Excellent with Honor”. In 1991 he obtained his PhD from the same university on “Mass Media and Political Decision- Making” with a grade of Excellent with Honor. In 1997, Dr. Hamada was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and in 2002; he has been awarded his Professorship Rank. 

In his professional capacity, he innovatively constructed a distinctive ethical scale for measuring ethical violations across various forms of journalism. Additionally, he served as an advisor to numerous Arab and Western news organizations and research firms. His expertise has been shared through the publication of over 100 articles in various daily and weekly Arab newspapers, as well as through appearance in numerous television interviews and debates. Dr. Hamada’s body of work includes over 50 policy-oriented, unpublished research projects covering readership, viewership, health and population communication, and election campaigns conducted between 1985 and 1996.
