I was overjoyed that the senior students I supervised this year (Bashayer Al-Binali and Shamma Al-Ahmad) won second place in the department’s competition at Qatar University for the best Computer Science projects. The project is titled “Yaqeen: A Search Engine to Respond to Misconceptions about Islam<\/em><\/strong>“. It is a preliminary implementation of a search engine that provides preemptive responses to common misconceptions about Islam, drawing from reliable sources. We collected over a thousand such misconceptions and provided refutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My happiness with this award stems firstly from the fact that the project relates to a field I am very close to, and I pray that God will make it beneficial to the Muslim community. Secondly, the project was undertaken by only two students (Bashayer Al-Binali and Shamma Al-Ahmad), which is unusual. Furthermore, neither of them possessed the necessary background knowledge in information retrieval before starting the project, and they were incredibly enthusiastic about the idea, even though its title and field might not seem appealing given our current circumstances. This is what made me proud of them, regardless of the award. Ultimately, the idea for the project came to me (over three years ago) from a student who had previously attended one of my courses. She entrusted me with its implementation because, in her opinion, the project was needed by the youth of her country (Pakistan) and the youth of our entire nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is certainly a small first step, and I pray that it will be followed by larger steps towards the desired goal, with God’s help and strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
