{"id":1710,"date":"2025-05-16T13:16:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T10:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qufaculty.qu.edu.qa\/telsayed\/?p=1710"},"modified":"2026-08-07T14:07:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T11:07:53","slug":"full-paper-led-by-sohaila-accepted-at-acl-findings-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qufaculty.qu.edu.qa\/telsayed\/full-paper-led-by-sohaila-accepted-at-acl-findings-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Full paper (led by Sohaila) accepted at ACL Findings 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;m so proud of my students, <strong><em>Sohaila Eltanbouly<\/em><\/strong> (prospective PhD student) and <strong>Salam Albatarni<\/strong> (MSc student), whose work established <em>a new state-of-the-art<\/em> performance (i.e., outperforming the best-ever published solution to the problem on a widely-used dataset) in Automated Essay Scoring (AES) by introducing a novel framework, called <strong>TRATES<\/strong>. TRATES full paper has just been accepted at <strong>ACL 2025 Findings<\/strong>, concluding more than 18 months of their hard work to get it published at <em>the top NLP conference<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main idea of TRATES is simple but elegant; instead of asking LLMs to directly score the written essays, ask them to suggest features and to extract the values of such features, then train a traditional regression model on those (and other generic) features!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TRATES is a pure work of our research group at Qatar University, and funded by Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is dedicated to our people in Gaza!
