Aristotle\u2019s Poetics in the Arabic eloquence Orbits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The openness of Arabs to the Greek thought and philosophy was not just a moment of civilizational and cultural interaction, but also a moment of confrontation between two different cultures, one based on elucidation and eloquence, while demonstration and evidentiary proof being the basis of the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although such confrontation has challenged the capabilities of the Arabic language to contain the various mental and cultural activities of the other and to keep abreast of the overall theoretical and conceptual frameworks presented to the Arabs, by representing them mentally and naming them linguistically, the translation of Aristotle\u2019s books has necessitated upgrading  language and thought from an accessible expressive level, and  a familiar mental activity   to new, different, and sophisticated levels and activities, and thus opening up to conceptual  patterns and terms that have not previously been contemplated  and to  ontological and metaphysical questions that haven\u2019t been posed before. This was necessary for the emerging Arab- Islamic civilization in order to benefit from the knowledge and sciences of previous nations, and to assert its dominance and superiority in various areas over other civilizations at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, the present paper seeks to reveal the interaction between Arabic language and Greek thought by investigating how Aristotle\u2019s books, in particular \u201cOn the soul\u201d, \u201cPoetics\u201d, and \u201cRhetoric\u201d, have been transmitted and translated into Arabic and Islamic culture through commentaries, and summaries. Our aim is to bring into light the foundations and the methodology of translation from the Arab perspective at the time, and highlight the channels through which Aristotle\u2019s concepts have passed to the different fields of Arabic- Islamic knowledge, and address the totality of the linguistic, cultural and intellectual problems that both accompanied this process, and helped construct an authentic Arab methodology of translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
