I am a Molecular Biologist by training, a Teacher by choice, and a Computer Geek by inclination.

  • I fell in love with Biology the first time I looked through a microscope in grade 4. I’ve been fascinated by cells ever since.
  • I fell in love with computers when my parents bought our first computer (in the days of Windows 95 – it was a long time ago).
    • While, at first, I enjoyed working with the hardware and aspects of early web development, I also noticed the potential for the use of gamification in learning and using technology in education – I thought games like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego did a good job of engaging learners without making it look like learning (Warning: this link will take you to a playable version of the actual game from the 1990s).
  • I fell in love with teaching during my first day of teaching a Histology lab as a Teaching Assistant in Graduate School. Sharing my fascination with cells with my students was very gratifying.

My interest in how cells work has resulted in an HBSc and MSc in Molecular Biology from the University of Toronto. While my strong teaching focus has also lead me to complete a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology at the University of British Columbia, which has boosted my ability to work at the intersection of Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge.

For an interesting example of how that “intersection” can sometimes look, please see what could be coming soon to my BIOL 451 course.
