Phil. in linguistic       <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.du.ac.in\/index.php?page=department-of-linguistics\" target=\"_blank\">University of Delhi<\/a>, Delhi, India.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I am Professor of Linguistics in the&nbsp;Department of English Literature &amp; Linguistics in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qu.edu.qa\/artssciences\/\">College of Arts <\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qu.edu.qa\/artssciences\/\" target=\"_blank\">&amp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qu.edu.qa\/artssciences\/\"> Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;at Qatar University. I am a linguist in both the popular and scholarly senses of the term. In the popular sense, I am a linguist because I proficiently speak Urdu, Hindi, English, and Arabic. In addition to commanding different levels of speech in Urdu-Hindi, I also have a good control of both the Devanagari and Arabic\/Persian scripts. I also have a near-native proficiency in Yemeni dialect. In the scholarly sense, I am a linguist because I study language. I specialize in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linguisticsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">sociolinguistics<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013a branch of linguistics that studies the social, political, and cultural aspects of language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color:#0770ac\" class=\"has-inline-color\">In the popular sense, I am a linguist because I speak Urdu, Hindi, English, and Arabic. In the scholarly sense, I am a linguist because I study language.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My specialty is sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. I have done extensive fieldwork in the city of Old Delhi, previously known as Sh\u0101hjah\u0101n\u0101b\u0101d.
