Dr. Irene Theodoropoulou is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at Qatar University, and a Visiting Associate Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University in Qatar during the academic year 2021-2022. She has a Ph.D in Sociolinguistics from King’s College London, an M.Phil. in English and Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, and a BA (summa cum laude) in Classics and Linguistics from the University of Athens. Her research and teaching interests include sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, rhetoric and intercultural communication, and their interface with politics, popular culture, and social media. She is the recipient of UREP and JSREP Grants from Qatar National Research Fund, as well as a High Impact Grant from Qatar University. She is the author of Sociolinguistics of Speech Style and Social Class in Contemporary Athens (Benjamins, 2014), and the co-editor (with Johanna Tovar) of the Research Companion to Language and Country Branding (Routledge, 2021).
She is the recipient of the Qatar University College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 2013, and the Qatar University College of Arts and Sciences Research Excellence Award in 2015.
